My journey to Istanbul left an indelible mark on my senses, with the city’s scent not just encapsulating its vibrant life, rich history, and diverse cultural influences but also intriguingly blending the scents of the East and the West.

The Scent of Istanbul: A Tapestry of Aroma

As I went through Istanbul’s bustling streets, the aroma was a complex and intriguing combination of numerous ingredients. The air was thick with the perfume of spices wafting from the spice bazaars, the salty breeze from the Bosphorus, and the sweet, floral notes of the numerous gardens and parks.

1. The Spice Bazaars: Spices dominate the scent of Istanbul, especially in areas like the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar. The spicy smell of cumin, the sweetness of cinnamon, the warmth of cloves, and the earthy richness of saffron combine to provide a symphony of scents that not only reflect the city’s unique culinary culture but also immerse you in its vibrant atmosphere.
2. The Bosphorus Breeze: The salty, fresh aroma of the Bosphorus Strait, which separates the city’s European and Asian sides, adds a marine element to the olfactory profile. The smell of the sea blends with the fragrances of the surrounding fish markets, where the day’s catch is displayed.
3. The Gardens and Parks: Istanbul is also recognized for its gorgeous gardens and parks, including Gülhane Park and the grounds around the Topkapi Palace. Roses, tulips, and jasmine provide a sweet and refreshing element to the city’s general aroma.

Personal Memories & Stories

These scents hold a special place in my heart since they remind me of Istanbul. I recall going through the crowded alleys of Sultanahmet, Istanbul’s ancient core, where the air was thick with the perfume of grilled meats from street vendors, combined with the sweetness of baklava and the rich flavour of Turkish coffee.

One memory is an evening spent at a little café near the Galata Tower. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and hookah smoke mixed with that of the adjacent Bosphorus. Despite the city’s hectic pace, it was a moment of peace and introspection.

Designing a perfume for Istanbul

If I were to create a perfume for Istanbul, I would capture the city’s deep and diverse personality by carefully combining top, middle, and base notes.

Top Notes: 

1. Bergamot: To depict Istanbul’s freshness and vigour, bergamot would offer a bright and zesty tone reminiscent of the citrus trees prevalent in the city’s gardens.
2. Lemon: Lemon would give freshness and a clean, exhilarating aroma, evoking the energy and vibrancy of Istanbul’s bustling markets and streets.

Middle Notes:

1. Turkish Rose: As a tribute to Istanbul’s lovely gardens and parks, the Turkish rose would bring flowery sweetness and elegance to the fragrance. This note would also represent the city’s extensive cultural legacy and history.
2. Saffron: One of the most coveted spices found in Istanbul’s bazaars, saffron adds a warm, spicy, and somewhat earthy note that reflects the city’s colourful culinary culture.
3. Jasmine: Jasmine complements the Turkish rose by delivering a sweet and exotic floral note reminiscent of the city’s beautiful gardens.

Base Notes:

1. Oud: Oud, a precious and fragrant wood, would lend depth and complexity to the perfume. This note would represent Istanbul’s historical and cultural richness, as the city has long been a crossroads of cultures.
2. Amber: Amber would give warmth and a gentle sweetness, echoing the golden hues of Istanbul’s sunsets and the kindness of its residents.
3. Patchouli: Patchouli would create an earthy and somewhat musky note, anchoring the perfume and imparting a sense of mystery and fascination, similar to the city’s labyrinthine streets and secret corners.
