While the fashion world has been met throughout the years with criticisms towards the impacts that fast fashion especially had with the environment, eco-friendly brands started to skyrocket and started to amplify in the fashion industry. Moreover, now because brands are much more in touch and open about the materials they use, and the behind the scenes process of their items, the fashion industry is shifting to become much more conscious and more modern. This standard that the fashion industry is prevailing is not only going to spread throughout the world of fashion but throughout all areas of culture and society. It’s going to irrigate the way society perceives the value of sustainability and ethical standards in various parts of life.
The Y2k era, or rather known as 2000s fashion was a time of vibrant colors and prints, bold accessories and outfit statement pieces, and iconic trends that have recently resurfaced due to the rise of low-rise bottoms, ultra-mini skirts, and even more.
Due to the access to the past’s popular fashion culture, Gen Z have grown up at a time where they have digital access to any era of fashion they desire. As a vintage fashion enthusiast, my personal access to iconic trends has greatly been influenced by social media. However, as much as I have access to all types of fashion content, I also have access to all types of fashion companies. As I and many others have become aware of fashion culture, we have also become aware of the behind the scenes issues that plague the fashion industry. As we became more aware of our fashion choices, this access to heaps of digital media has allowed people to become more conscious and in touch with sustainable solutions that can provide us with 2000s fashion in a more modern twist. This revival of Y2k Fashion has now arrived with a sustainable twist, we’re now able to connect the future of this world with the future of the art of fashion. Here are some tips on how to embrace Y2k/2000s fashion while also supporting sustainable fashion:
- DIY and Upcycling your own Clothes
Instead of simply buying new clothes, another awesome way is to upcycle your own existing clothing by DIY ing and transforming your own clothes into any era of your choosing. From Y2k fashion to the old money aesthetic. This not only allows you to transform your own vision but to also create unique and never seen before clothing pieces.
- Thrift and Vintage Shopping
One of the best solutions is to simply just shop in thrift stores or vintage stores. Thrift and vintage stores have varieties of clothing, from your sister’s closet to your grandma’s, you can find anything. This allows you to not only reduce waste but also find iconic pieces of quality.
- Support Sustainable Brands
If vintage shops or thrift shops are not to your liking, then supporting external sustainable brands can most definitely be eco-friendly and help you look for dream wardrobe items. These sustainable brands use ethical sourcing of materials such as using organic, recycling, or upcycling materials. A lot of these brands aim to reduce waste by using items that are long-lasting.
