Perfume and Fashion are synonymous; fashion complements perfume, and perfume complements fragrance. While some people would think that perfume is not as important as the outfit you are wearing, I would argue that fragrance is just as important.

Fragrance, arguably, elevates one’s outfit. Fragrance throughout history has gone through many evolutions and phases but one thing is certain — fragrances have always been used to create a story behind one’s persona and presentation. Whether you use a fruity, youthful scent for the summer, or a sophisticated fragrance to complement your entrance to a high society gala, fragrances are important accessories.

Fragrances carry different meanings in society and the art of choosing a fragrance is not black-and-white, but there are some fragrances that historically and timelessly match the vibe you are going for. For a pool party in August, for example, one would tend to gravitate towards a coconut, light, fruity scent. This scent would match well with a bathing suit, long flowy skirt, denim shorts, and a bright top. These scents encapsulate an aura of playfulness, fun and overall soaking in the sun.

For an early spring picnic in a flower field, one would tend to go for a floral, light, airy, and clean scent. I would imagine individuals wearing sun hats, light cable knit sweaters, long denim skirts, flowy tops, white sneakers, and gingham print clothing articles. I imagine this scent complementing the air around you, or, if you are not in a picnic, encapsulating the scents of early spring. I imagine individuals would want to use this scent to welcome spring, and escape a long winter. Furthermore, I would imagine these scents to be less strong than summer, and be delicate, subtle scents.

For another scenario, I imagine a scent for a warm, cozy winter night. Scents that complement this situation would be cashmere, pine, vanilla, toasted marshmallow, and sandalwood. Outfits that would be worn in this situation include oversized sweatshirts, sweatpants, colorful fuzzy socks, UGG slippers, oversized hoodies, warm fuzzy blankets, and pajama bottoms.

I would also imagine the geographical location of someone to affect the fragrances that they choose to use. For example, people from Southern California may use more oceany, fresh scents whereas I would imagine the average New Yorker would use more elevated, “classy” scents.

Recognizing that outfits are more than just putting together clothing, it is creating a whole aura, is important in recognizing the significance that fragrances have in elevating and refining a look’s purpose. If you select a fragrance that does not traditionally match the vibe of your outfit, you can curate a different unique vibe that fits your own personal aesthetic and brand.

While we cannot see or smell fragrances through photos on social media, fragrances are known for changing the chemicals in our brain. Ultimately, if someone smells good, they are going to be more confident in the way that they present and in their actions. If their perfume selection for the day fits a certain vibe, they are going to exude this energy, which will be reflected in their actions. Fragrances are essential to everyday life, and someone’s outfit. The impact of choosing a fragrance is highly overlooked compared to other aspects of one’s presentation. People often want to wear a subtle scent in order to not be overwhelming to others that they pass by, but this subtle choice has great impacts on one’s overall presentation. Whether it makes someone more self confident, or conveys a message and story to others, the selection of a fragrance is quintessential in curating a certain presentation one wants to curate. Fragrances do not last forever, so you can also change up your fragrance daily! Fragrances are so versatile and are an essential part of self presentation and confidence.
