Perfume fuses fashion, beauty, memories, and artistic pursuits. Through a fragrance, one can experience the journey of scent through a story, nostalgia, and visuals. In my experience, perfume has played a part in my artistic journey through self-expression and interest exploration.
My First Fragrances
As a kid, I admired all the pretty perfume bottles of my mom, her friends, and older family members. I loved smelling each one and finding out which scents were too floral for me, perfectly fruity, or refreshingly earthy. I started keeping my own fragrances that I would share or collect with friends. These were Bath & Body Works Body Mists that I had too much of and too much product for one girl’s lifetime of perfumes. Finding new seasonal scents and sharing them with friends allowed me to have something fun and in common with others in the fashion/beauty world. I quickly found out that I preferred the idea of collecting rather than using the actual perfumes I was collecting. I started collecting other things that made more sense to my interests and didn’t waste any product. I found that I liked trying different scents and comparing designs on the packaging rather than keeping different fragrances from the same brand. Eventually, I started to enjoy the creative design process and artistic journey behind perfume, beauty, and fashion over the previous scents I had purchased.

Finding My Fragrance
After exploring more adult, luxury, and celebrity brands of perfumes, I started to find an actual range of fragrances I preferred. Sometimes the journey to finding your scent is more impactful than the product. I found out that in the summers I liked fruity warm scents but did not like floral tones. In the fall I preferred natural spice scents catered to the season or earthy ash tones revealing a more airy and earthy experience. Perfume became more of a detailed staple to enhance my everyday look or balance my physical appearance in school. I was no longer comparing different scents of one brand but rather comparing companies. I would recognize friends by the one fragrance they used special to them. Finding my fragrance became a scent associated with me during different seasons just as I noticed with my friends. In high school, I loved Sol De Janeiro which I still use from time to time for a season-specific scent. This started the process of finding my fragrance and not just what brand I liked for perfumes. My current set of fragrance scents follow the same undertones as my favorites from Sol de Janeiro and Yves Saint Laurent but allow the flexibility to pick a fragrance palette from differing companies.

Fragrance And Its Path to Art
Through the journey of comparing perfumes, sharing with friends, and finding my fragrance, I found a love of artistic expression. These acts revealed an interest in sharing other beauty products and comparing makeup brands or different outfit pieces with friends. I enjoy sharing photography, cinematography, design, and beauty inspiration just as I used to excitedly compare perfumes as a kid. I began to research perfumes for more than just a fragrance and admiring the bottle design, behind-the-scenes inspiration, and brand style. Even if I haven’t purchased as many perfumes, I enjoy looking at celebrity and influencer releases of new perfume products to witness the artistic journey.

The Journey to CHIQIO
My interest in perfumes, artistic inspiration, and marketing collaboration led me to my current internship with CHIQIO. With this company, I can uphold these interests while learning more about perfume, reading about other people’s fragrance journeys, and growing professionally in the process. The public Discord server allows interns, employees, customers, and inspired followers to share art, ideas, and communication. This relates to the company’s philosophy of Artworkism as well by treating everything in life as art. I found that although I have perfumes that I like now, learning about other peoples’ favorites has opened my mind to new fragrances. Through CHIQIO I have had the opportunity to receive a sample of a perfume of my choice among other interns. We had the choice between ‘Mountain Rain’ and ‘Forest Child’ but I chose ‘Mountain Rain’ as it better aligns with my fragrance preferences. I am excited to promote CHIQIO, furthering my art and perfume journey, while also experiencing the brand’s products. I love the scent and have now found a new blend of my favorite tones to use as a summer staple.
